In Search of the TruthSpeaking the Truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act--Orwell December 27 New blogI will not be writing here very much if at all. I will be at my new blog:
Thanks to all of my readers. I hope that you will visit me frequently at my new home. You don't have to have a blogspot account. I have haloscan on the new website, so anyone can easily comment. It has been fun. December 08 I'm back...kindaI haven't decided if I am going to keep this site open for much longer. I have been neglecting it for some time because I was involved in another site. When my tenure at the other site ended abruptly yesterday, I thought of opening my own blogger site. I will let you know what I decide. I have a feeling that, because of my neglect, I have lost most of my readership here. I was thinking that if I have to start over anyway, I might as well go bigger. November 20 The widening American class divideI ran across this great opinion piece by the new Democrat Senater from Virginia. He covers all the things I have been saying for years. So, here ya go:
From the Wallstreet Journal:
While I may not agree with every single point that he makes, his general thesis still stands true. We have a major problem here and it needs to be fixed pronto. November 15 Current thoughtsWhy do you think the republicans rolled over so easy this election? If they possibly used voting machines to skew other elections, why wouldn't they have done it again? This has really been bugging me for a while now. My guess: They know that it won't matter in the near future. The biggest secret right now is the waffling of the economy. It is bad. Real bad.
I was hoping that things would begin to get better here after the elections, but I am starting to think otherwise. I think that the elections don't matter because the damage is done. It is a matter of time before we will see the results of the assault on our economy over the last few years. The path has been set and there is no way to derail it. Everything from the economy to war to the newest "terror" legislation will begin to unfold soon. Yes, I know I sound bleak, but what choice do I have. When you really look at what the Bush admin. has managed to do over the past six years, you start to realize that this is NOT going to be fixed overnight. We are headed down a certain path (mapped out by the neocons) and we have no breaks.
What the dems can't do:
1. They cannot fix the economy in enough time to keep us from a major slump or depression.
2. They cannot repeal any of the unconstitutional legislation because they do not have enough votes, and even if they did, it would be derailed by Bush.
3. They cannot even pass new legislation that changes parts of the old legislation because Bush would veto it, and they do not have enough votes to overrule a veto.
Really, the only pull they have at the moment is with the Iraq war, and that is still largely up to the 'decider'.
My predictions:
I foresee...
1. An economic crisis. I am not sure how bad it will be, but we have created an economic environment that is susceptible to a catastrophy.
2. An attack on Iran by Israel. This may not be any time soon. It may even be after we withdrawl our troops from Iraq, but I see it as a very real possibility. And, of course, we will have to run to their aid.
3. The US still not resolving the Israeli/Palestine problem. Why would they, we need this friction to keep the neverending war on terrorism going.
4. A combination of some kind of war and economic strife to lead to an even broader implementation of some of the 'terror' legislation that has passed. (Military Commission Act)
5. The rise of a new super-power going un-checked while we deplete our treasury and resources. That super-power will use our money that we have pumped into their economy to build a military that, for the first time, can rival ours, while our economy and military dwindles to nothing.
6. Rampant privatization as a result of all of the above.
No, it is not a pretty picture that I have painted above. If we are lucky only a few of them will come to pass. These are just some thoughts that have been floating around my head. Nothing more.
Fred, I will begin to post on your site again soon. I have been using this blog as a way to think out loud recently and didn't really think you would want your blog used for my random thoughts. November 13 Not feeling well...I've been sick for a few days, so I haven't been much up for blogging. So, I will just throw this out there: Hillary, Schumer, and Lieberman need to go. I can't stand them. I can't stand Biden either. So, he can go too. But, first, the other three I mentioned need to go. Or, we need an actual third party. I think we could have enough people if we took the Chafee republicans in too. Especially, since it seems Chafee is slightly left of the dems I just listed. (which doesn't take much) It won't happen though. We are too institutionalized as a country. We have to keep up the status quo.
Anyway, I think that the dems would be complete morons if they have any of the aforementioned people run for president. Or geniuses, if you realize that would definitely move us closer to a one party system of government since none of the people mentioned here (with the exception of Chafee) are any different ideologically than the republicans. If their intention in 2008 is to move to a one party government system, then that would be the way to go. I have heard people floating the rediculous McCain/Lieberman ticket idea. Yeah, I want some insane one party dictatorship ran by two bloated egos...not. So, there it is. Agree with me or disagree with me, I could care less. But watch, I will not be surprised to see these four (Hillary, Schumer, Lieberman, and Biden) undermine what the majority of dem voters want every step of the way. They are fake, and I have a feeling that more people will come to see their fakeness in the near future.
*And for those of you who will, undoubtedly, point out the miniscule differences in ideologies, I would like to point out something. If you take out "wedge" issues like gays and abortion, there is no discernable difference in economic or foreign policy between the above dems and the neocons. I would also like to point out that other than to divide the people, those issues are meaningless to the politcos. As we have seen, unlike a lot of their constituents, the repugs don't have a problem with gay people (hell, most of them are the *gay* people). And, I would go further to say that there aren't too many politicians that are *really* for banning abortion. They just take that stance to get votes. So, if you take those two distractions out, what are you left with? *
Update:
Fred reminded me that Rahm Emmanuel should be on the above list. I concur. Also, flipping through the channels, I ran across CNN and Glenn Beck was on. I nearly vomited. He basically said that our democracy caused us to "lose" the Vietnam war and will cause us to "lose" the Iraq war. Hey, Glen, why are you on my fucking t.v. spouting ant-democratic propaganda? Can Glen Beck just STFU!?!
November 09 RE: ElectionsYES!
YES!
YES!
YES!
Now we just have to start undoing all the damage that has been done, while coming up with some kind of solution for Iraq that is good for the Iraqi people and the US. That is a tough one, but even if we cannot get optimal results, at least we will have tried something other than 'stay the course'. Iraq has been so screwed up, this is going to be difficult because the admin. has been 'staying the course' for so long that there is no simple, easy, right answer for Iraq left. The most optimal solution would be to find a time machine, go back in time, and make sure that we never went there in the first place. That is how bleak this is. Of course, that is obviously not an option, so we have to find something that is less than optimal.
The economy is another problem. We have got to find some way to fix this trade deficit with China. A minimum wage increase is a must. Will we suffer some setbacks in the global market initially? Maybe. But, the reason we will is because we have moved away from producing anything here. We need to reassess our entire system now, not later. I am not an isolationist, I believe in globalism, but I also believe that you cannot conitnue to be solely a debtor society. Imagine if China suddenly had an economic crash (for whatever reason), not only would our sole lender be in big trouble, but they may hike up the interest on all the money we owe them to rediculous amounts, plus we rely on them for a large chunk of our consumer products. If they suddenly went under, we would be scrambling to replace those with someone else. In the meantime, we may be looking at a shortage in supplies. My point is that although global trade is nice, you still need to have a safety net, some self-reliance. We need to know that we will not completely go under if the global market takes a tank.
Plus, we are in debt, huge debt. We are already in trouble, and we will soon see the first consequences of this. You cannot function indefinetly on borrowed money. We will soon see countries start losing confidence in our monetary system. If/when that happens, it will be down hill from there.
I think the hardest thing to do will be to undo the unconstitutional legislation that has been passed over the past few years. This is one of the most important to me (after making people stop killing people in Iraq). We have got to get these bills undone. Unfortunately, you need a large majority to pull that off. I hope that we can get our rights back, but at this moment I am satisfied that we may be able to at least keep the Congress from passing anymore unconstitutional bills.
My wish list:
1. At least one non-corporate/christofacist Supreme Court Judge. 2. National Healthcare 3. Minimum wage increase. 4. No more wars. 5. Lower college tuition costs. 6. Palestinian Peace agreement. 7. Be out of Iraq in the next two years, and have the reconstruction (by the Iraqis) well on it's way. Give women back their Saddam-era rights (at least). 8. Give women in America back their rights! Let us have the right to choose and the right to birth control. Do not allow medical establishments to refuse care to women by refusing to fill our prescriptions!! 9. Stop ignoring Darfur. Start working on a solution. 10. Close Gtmo!! 11. Make torture illegal again!! Give us back Habeas Corpus!! 12. Move away from the concept of 'free trade' and towards the concept of 'fair trade'. 13. Get rid of the 'abstinence only' policies in Africa and get back to condoms and birth control that had been working to reverse the Aids problem in Africa. 14. Adequately fund public schools!! 15. Fix the voting system, get rid of lobby influence on our government, and stop the fear mongering!!
I know, I know. Waaaaay too much to hope for, but it is good to hope anyway. I will be lucky if maybe two things on that list get done. The republicans, and even some conservative democrats, are going to make it hard. Not to mention that Bush has veto power. It is still such an uphill battle. But, we are not quite there yet. This is just the beginning.
November 07 local election newsSo with this new string of voter ID laws coming into effect today, people are wondering what the impact will be on the average voter. If the governor of south carolina can be used as an example, people will face potentially significant problems getting their vote to count.
Of course, the governor cannot be used as an example of the average voter. the average voter would be challenged by republican poll operatives, sometimes to the point of harrassment or intimidation.
So we see a history of Republican activists challenging anyone with a discrepency in their ID requirements. But Sanford just had to go home, get a new form of ID and was allowed to come back and vote. In 2004, regular people were forced away and denied their vote, or they were given "placebo" provisional ballots that were never counted. In Missouri, there are already reports this morning that poll workers are demanding picture ID from voters, even though the courts already struck down that requirement. So what stops republicans from committing voter fraud through intimidation and harrassment? Apparently, you will be fine if you are a recognizable republican. If you happen to be some anonymous person in a democratic district, know your rights and stick up for yourself. demand your right to vote. don't go home without voting. November 03 Not like anyone reads this...I took a good political quiz today at a place called politicalcompass.org. I like it because it is a European site that has more of a range then the left/right crap here in America. So, if you want, give it a go and see where you end up. Also, check out the other links on the site, like the 2004 election profile. Interesting stuff.
Here is where I stand for all of you out there who haven't figured out where I am politically:
Which means that I am pretty much left of well...everyone. I will put a picture of where I ended up in a thumbnail. Oh, and the numbers above are in relation to the (x,y) axis of a graph (see thumbnail), where: (X positive, Y positive) is Authoritarian right: (X positive, Y negative) is libertarian right: (X negative, Y positive) is authoritarian left:
(X negative, Y negative) is libertarian left. That last one is where I am. If this is confusing, look at the picture or go to the site and they explain it.
And remember, enjoy! It may be fun to figure out where you are in the political spectrum.
November 02 That uneasy feeling in the back of your mindToday I noticed a headline on MSNBC that otherwise may have been benign at most, but gave me this eery feeling in light of some other recent articles. You see people, bad things usually sneak in slowly in small, sometimes non-threatening, manners. But, these things can add up over time and come and bite you on the ass. Here is the story, that I am referring to:
Operation Falcon III? Sounds like a military operation. Also, maybe I am paranoid, but a massive criminal sweep (record setting even) just days after a story that said Bush had signed a bill that, from what I understand, has a section in it that underminds the Insurrection Act. According to Senator Leahy and some Republican Senator from Montana, this section in this bill would make it easier for the President to declare martial law.
Here is an excerpt from Leahy's website:
If that is not frightening, I don't know what is. But, this is not all. All you have to do is add this up with the loss of habeas corpus in the Military Commissions Act, the Patriot Acts, eavesdropping, cameras cropping up all over the place (they are going to put 30 up here in my downtown), ect... After a while you see a pattern emerging. And all of this brings me to this new report released by Privacy International. The study ranked the US near the bottom in regard to privacy. We are catagorized as an "extensive surveillance society". You can read an analysis of the study here. I guess you have to ask yourself, "When does it stop being paranoia and start being reality?" I think the answer to that is that it already is the reality that we live in. Now that we have that answer, the next question is, "What will the government have to do with these "tools" they have collected before the citizens of this country stand up and refuse to give any more of our rights away?" Oh, and by the way, I know that I started this thread with a story about criminals, but the point is, could this be practice? Will the next "operation" be rounding up actual criminals. or will it be to round up political dissidents? Is it curious that they did this so close to the elections? If there is a large group of protestors after the elections, protesting that there was voter fraud, could they be rounded up? Couldn't Bush just call up the National Guard, without the governor's permission, and have them round up protestors? Then, according to the new Military Commissions Act, couldn't a tribunal then declare them "enemy combatants" and send them to some undisclosed prison where they would not be allowed to petition a court as to their innocence because they no longer have habeas corpus? Will they do this? Who knows. The point is that they now have all the "tools" to be able to do this. You know, all the "tools" they are always talking about needing to fight the "war on terrorism". Those "tools", for the most part, are useless against terrorists. But, they are very useful in controlling your own citizens. Welcome to the "extensive surveillance society." |
