"Food" for Thought

In The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Tom Friedman, whose brain must have been replaced with a pile of crap when he was an infant, suggested the Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention.  The theory states that "when a country reached the level of economic development where it had a middle class big enough to support a McDonald's network, it became a McDonald's country.  And people in McDonald's countries didn't like to fight wars anymore, they preferred to wait in line for burgers."  While this sounds silly, it is simply a restating of some older theories of warfighting and its prevention in more modern terms.  At the time that he wrote the book, this was pretty much true, excepting civil wars, where McDonald's was a neutral party.

But now we have this:

and this:

I suppose if you asked Friedman (the crap-brained man) what he thought of this development, he would bluster something about how Lebanon didn't make war against Israel, it was Hezbollah.  But Israel sure attacked all of Lebanon, indiscriminately and without regard for who belonged to Hezbollah and who didn't.  So perhaps he could fast-talk his way out of it, but I would still argue that, even in the face of conventional wisdom regarding economic development overriding a country's bloodlust and thirst for war, there's just no accounting for some people's sociopathy, arrogance in the face of international law, and ill-will toward their fellow human beings.

On a different point, I find it interesting, in perusing the casualty figures from the month of hell, to note the percentage of Israeli dead who were in the military vs the percentage of people who were killed in Lebanon (to include the UN workers and the Lebanese army, both parties that Israel specifically claimed to be avoiding) that were in Hezbollah.  I find this interesting most notably because Hezbollah was using short range rockets with very little in the way of guidance, to say nothing of precision while Israel was using some of our more advanced precision guided munitions the entire time.  Makes one wonder how such an advanced military can claim to have made so many targeting mistakes while a guerrilla force with a 30 year old radar guidance system can seem to have such an edge in hitting their intended target.  Of course, the other day, Israel struck a plainly marked Reuters van.  Twice.  And they hit an ambulance during the actual fighting.  so perhaps some of their pilots are color blind or something and couldn't see the big red cross on top of the ambulance.  Or maybe one pilot was so unfortunately illiterate that he couldn't read 'TV' written in English, Arabic, or Hebrew.  Maybe they should make pilots take a test or something.

Far away from home

Yesterday I found out my mom is in the hospital.  About a week ago my grandma was in the hospital and was put on a heart monitor.  I haven't heard what came of that.  I would usually just call up mom and get updated, but now she is in the hospital.  I am in the dark most of the time.  If anyone can keep me up to date, that would be great...that means you hummingbird.  So, as everyone can see, it has been a little crazy here.  And, my hubby started school today.

I went to my first Drinking Liberally on Tuesday.  I met a lot of nice people.  I wasn't sure what it would be like, but I was glad that I went.  I think I will definitely go back.  There were about 20 people there, so it was a bit crowded.  So crowded actually that I didn't meet everyone.  And that isn't even the whole group.

When things get back to normal I will be posting here more often.

UPDATE:
Mom's out of the hospital and seems to be doing fine.  She will know more next week.  And, it looks like Grandma might be put on a pace-maker.  We will find out for sure next week.

Coconut Sweet Rice

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sweet rice
13.5 oz. can coconut milk
1/4 cup sugar
Fresh fruit

Directions:

Place the rice in a bowl with 2 cups water.  Cover the bowl & soak the rice at least four hours or overnight.

After the rice has soaked, put it into a pot and drain off some of the water, about 1.5-2 oz.  In a seperate pot, mix coconut milk and sugar together and simmer over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.  Pour the coconut milk/sugar mixture into the pan with the rice and stir.  Bring to a boil.  Then cover, reduce heat to medium low and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring after about 10 minutes.

The rice should be relatively thick and sticky.  Top with fresh mango or shredded coconut (my favorite).  Good hot or cold.

Here are some links to different ways that this dish is made:

This is my favorite dessert.  It is simple and delicious.

Yet another blog entry

Well, another blog entry anyway.  I have been abstaining for a while.  Not really on purpose, but just because I haven't had anything to say recently.  And not because there isn't anything important to talk about, but rather there is too much to talk about.  It is kind of like an overload of propaganda and crap that drains the life out of everyone.  So, I have been taking a propaganda break.  Basically, I have taken a step back and thought about a lot of things.  I realize that there are some people out there in the world that are beyond stupid and that there is no point trying to argue with them.  But more than that, there is no point even listening to them because their opinion is so divorced from rational thought that it is counterproductive to even give them a medium in which to spout their insanity.  These people should seriously be marginalized.

I would like to note that I am not going anywhere for good.  I realize I have been taking more and more breaks for longer and longer periods, and I have lost some readership because of it.  But, I am not shutting this blog down anytime soon, even though this new windows live crap is very, very slow.  So, I apologize to anyone who is having a hard time getting my site to come up.  It has been hard at times for me to get onto it since the switch to Live.

The most recent reason for my absence is that I have been sick from a sinus infection or something.  I would know for sure why I am sick if army medical care here wasn't such a joke.  I could call the appointment line tomorrow, but I wouldn't get an appointment with my PCM for at least two weeks, if he's even back from vacation.  By that time, I will either need to go to the hospital or I will feel better.  So, basically, other than for preventative care, the free medical care I am receiving right now is worthless.  I so much miss the Navy base I was at last.  I could get an appointment the same day most of the time.

My husband starts school again very soon so I will have a lot of free time and I will be on here a lot more often.  I will also get to finish some books that I started and never had time to finish: The One Percent Doctrine by Ron Suskind and 9-11 by Noam Chomsky.  So far, both of them are good.  I am only a few chapters into both of them though, so I cannot give a full review of either of them at the moment.

Recently, I have been focusing on some of my more enjoyable hobbies such as cooking.  Maybe I will integrate recipes into my blog in the future.  For now, goodnight all.

Alabama man protests the Iraq War

...in the nude.

This story is hilarious and great.  Sometimes I think I was raised in the weirdest state in the country.  I hope to see more people in small towns around the country stand up for what they believe, clothed or not.  Although I think the tactics were a bit strange, I am sure they will get attention and maybe give more people the courage to speak out.  Thank you, naked Alabama cowboy!

Quote from the naked cowboy:
"My dad told me years ago if you've got a stubborn mule, you've got to hit him across the head with a 2-by-4 in order to get his attention."

Temporarily out of chicken

That is what the sign said at the commissary today.  How the hell are you out of chicken?
