Running out of time

"The group's biannual Living Planet Report said the natural world was being degraded "at a rate unprecedented in human history".   It warned that if demand continued at the current rate, two planets would be needed to meet global demand by 2050."

"They added that if the world's population shared the UK's lifestyle, three planets would be needed to support their needs."

From ABC, Humans living far beyond planet's means: WWF

"If everyone around the world lived as those in America, we would need five planets to support us."

"People are turning resources into waste faster than nature can turn waste back into resources."

That last quote is the big one.  Like everything else, the Earth has to be able to replenish itself.  We are not allowing it time to do so.  We, especially Americans, want everything now, now, now!  It's all about "me, me, me!"  But we cannot sustain this kind of living.  Everything in America is defined by materialism: success, happiness, and even life itself.  We have to adopt a new outlook on life in general.  We need to conserve and care about the environment....you know, the thing that allows you to exist.  I know that some people won't care about this revelation or even think that there is a problem.  But that is because they are STUPID.  We have all got to understand that we are part of the Earth's ecosystem, and that the ecosystem has a balance that has to be maintained for our own survival.  We are not respecting that balance.

Vince,

I completely agree.  If I were to be measured by this scale, I would be one unhappy and unsuccessful person.  On the contrary, I am very happy with my life right now.  We don't have much, but that is perfectly fine.  It has just been sad seeing this country slip further and further into thinking that success and happiness have a monetary pricetag.  It is interesting b/c there are so many wealthy people who are miserable.  I think that people are obsessed with these things b/c it has become culturally the thing to do.  Even after we were attacked, we were told by our leaders to 'go shopping'.  We are never asked to sacrifice anything.  We are told to get everything we want, when we want it, even if we don't need it.

The funny thing is that these people, to be able to maintain their greedy lifestyle, never have time to enjoy life.

What we must do!
Redefine our concepts of happiness and success.
Neither one of those subjects are of much concern in my life.
If success is measured by the amount of material possessions I acquire, then I want no part of success.
If happiness is measured by how much I can act like an imbecile, or run around with a big shit eating smile on my face, then I want no part of happiness.
My confusion stems from people's outright fanatical obsession in the pursuit of these two simple words.

Its hard to be optimistic about this stuff.  The Canadian response has become, quite simply, more pathetic than the American response.  Plus, we're even more wasteful per capita.  In both countries, I don't think its so much that the people don't care; it seems the majority do.  Its the governments that don't.  They don't want to rock the corporate boat.  But the approach has been so pathetic and downright embarrassing, it might play come election time.

That is a pretty insane statement, scary.  Five planets?  Wow.  People really do need to wake up and soon.
