RE: Elections

YES!
YES!
YES!
YES!

Now we just have to start undoing all the damage that has been done, while coming up with some kind of solution for Iraq that is good for the Iraqi people and the US.  That is a tough one, but even if we cannot get optimal results, at least we will have tried something other than 'stay the course'.  Iraq has been so screwed up, this is going to be difficult because the admin. has been 'staying the course' for so long that there is no simple, easy, right answer for Iraq left.  The most optimal solution would be to find a time machine, go back in time, and make sure that we never went there in the first place.  That is how bleak this is.  Of course, that is obviously not an option, so we have to find something that is less than optimal.

The economy is another problem.  We have got to find some way to fix this trade deficit with China.  A minimum wage increase is a must.  Will we suffer some setbacks in the global market initially?  Maybe.  But, the reason we will is because we have moved away from producing anything here.  We need to reassess our entire system now, not later.  I am not an isolationist, I believe in globalism, but I also believe that you cannot conitnue to be solely a debtor society.  Imagine if China suddenly had an economic crash (for whatever reason), not only would our sole lender be in big trouble, but they may hike up the interest on all the money we owe them to rediculous amounts, plus we rely on them for a large chunk of our consumer products.  If they suddenly went under, we would be scrambling to replace those with someone else.  In the meantime, we may be looking at a shortage in supplies.  My point is that although global trade is nice, you still need to have a safety net, some self-reliance.  We need to know that we will not completely go under if the global market takes a tank.

Plus, we are in debt, huge debt.  We are already in trouble, and we will soon see the first consequences of this.  You cannot function indefinetly on borrowed money.  We will soon see countries start losing confidence in our monetary system.  If/when that happens, it will be down hill from there.

I think the hardest thing to do will be to undo the unconstitutional legislation that has been passed over the past few years.  This is one of the most important to me (after making people stop killing people in Iraq).  We have got to get these bills undone.  Unfortunately, you need a large majority to pull that off.  I hope that we can get our rights back, but at this moment I am satisfied that we may be able to at least keep the Congress from passing anymore unconstitutional bills.

My wish list:

1.  At least one non-corporate/christofacist Supreme Court Judge.

2.  National Healthcare

3.  Minimum wage increase.

4.  No more wars.

5.  Lower college tuition costs.

6.  Palestinian Peace agreement.

7.  Be out of Iraq in the next two years, and have the reconstruction (by the Iraqis) well on it's way.  Give women back their Saddam-era rights (at least).

8.  Give women in America back their rights!  Let us have the right to choose and the right to birth control.  Do not allow medical establishments to refuse care to women by refusing to fill our prescriptions!!

9.  Stop ignoring Darfur.  Start working on a solution.

10.  Close Gtmo!!

11.  Make torture illegal again!!  Give us back Habeas Corpus!!

12.  Move away from the concept of 'free trade' and towards the concept of 'fair trade'.

13.  Get rid of the 'abstinence only' policies in Africa and get back to condoms and birth control that had been working to reverse the Aids problem in Africa.

14.  Adequately fund public schools!!

15.  Fix the voting system, get rid of lobby influence on our government, and stop the fear mongering!!

I know, I know.  Waaaaay too much to hope for, but it is good to hope anyway.  I will be lucky if maybe two things on that list get done.  The republicans, and even some conservative democrats, are going to make it hard.  Not to mention that Bush has veto power.  It is still such an uphill battle.  But, we are not quite there yet.  This is just the beginning.

Fade, have you noticed in the last 72 hours how many of the right wing blowhards have been trying to pull their asses out of the fire?  Rush gets on his soap box yesterday talking about how he's tired of carrying water for republicans who weren't able to stand up for their own policies.  He felt burdened by the pressure of being the number 1 radio show and serving as a mouthpiece, arguing for things that he felt neither himself nor the politicians he was speaking for actually believed in.  he basically admitted to his listeners that he has been lying to them for years now, but then a caller asked him why he lied for so long and he said he hadn't been lying.  then he stumbled into some drug induced logic that I couldn't follow any more.

talk about flip-flopping.  he was for his own lies before he was against them.  but now he's for them again.

and the Young Turks were going off on Glen Beck this morning for talking about how long he had been hard on the republicans and tried to claim that he was more than a right wing shill, even with evidence to the contrary on any transcript of his show you want to look at.

so it seems like the rats are jumping ship on the neocon agenda.  but i would simply look for them to restyle the same agenda as a kinder, gentler neocon.  The neo-compassionate neo-conservative, if I may coin a phrase.  for instance, chafee claims that the only reason he stayed in the republican party while consistently voting against everything they wanted to pass was that he felt staying in the party that was, at the time, in the majority would put him in a better spot to provide federal pork to Rhode Island.  i suppose now he feels open to create a new "splinter" of the republican party that claims on the surface that they want something besides money and power.  i wonder if he will run in a couple of years for state office in Rhode Island on the "conneticutt for Leiberman" ticket.

Food for thought. I guess I must temper my desire for revenge with the greater desire to open my fellow American's eyes. I didnt' realize the Fox News was the only default cable channel, but (sigh) it fricking makes perfect sense in the world we live in. But Democrats need to stand up for themselves when talking to the reality challenged and MAKE themselves be heard. Personally my evil enemy of the moment is Super-Bush Cheerleader Larry Kudlow on CNBC.

Fade,
On second thought, I think the democrats need to continue going on Fox, at least for the time being.  They need to fundamentally change the way they participate in interviews.  there is some "democratic" strategist lady named Debbie or something that I have seen on there a few times who needs to be thrown under the proverbial bus quickly, but I think that the major players need to keep participating.

Here's why.  At least one person commenting at Crooks and Liars said that in his area of Ohio, Fox news is the only 24 hr news network that comes with their basic cable package.  He has already stated his intention to petition Sherrod Brown to require Time Warner to provide a more fair and balanced group of TV news networks.  (pun intended)  Anyway, the Democrats need to continue to show up on Fox, at least until the entire country has access to a more reputable source of information.  I would love to see people like Reid, Dean, Sanders, et al, get on there, hold their ground, and act like the party that holds a majority in both houses of Ccongress.  Every democrat could take a cue from Wesley Clark.  In his interviews with O'Reilly, he is always calm, salient, and gets in the occasional jab right back at BillO.  Always a joy to watch Bill get shut down and made to look crazy.  The way these people work, if you remain calm and keep pushing your message without falling into the terms of the argument that THEY establish, they flip out and start shouting about nothing.

this kind of also goes back to a post I made at Fred's site a while ago.  By allowing someone else to determine the rhetorical terms of the argument, you allow them to define victory in that argument.  So long as you agree to the fundamental terms of the argument that they set, there's really no point in talking.  We need people who are willing and able to stand up for their own argument without trying to justify or rationalize anything within the other side's rhetorical framework.

Anyway, happy day all around.  it's a long way forward, but we've made a long couple of strides this week.  It only took the legalization of torture and the destruction of fundamental aspects of the Constitution to wake these fuckers up, but most of them finally came around.

Yes, it is a great feeling Fade.  But, as time goes on a bittersweet one.  There is just so much to do.  I don't think that we will get near as much done as we need to do.  I also agree with you on the Fox thing.  Dems need to avoid that place.  As far as 'saving' America, I damn sure hope so.  The one certainty, I hope, is that the Bush admin. won't be allowed to further the damage.  As far as fixing the current damage, that will take longer than this current Congress has.  To completely undo the damage, we need to make sure that the republicans don't regain the majority in the next several elections.  We need a third party.  But, that is looking way into the future.

Simon,
Nice to see ya.  My wishlist is just the stuff that was in the back of my head at the moment.  I'm sure I could think of a lot more things.  Also, the list is not in the oreder of importance, just the order that it popped into my head.  I hope we can at least get started on some of these things.

Bird,
Yes, of course I am happy.  :)  However, my own personal vote was worthless, basically.  Voting non-repug in Alabama and all.  But, oh well.  I am happy for the nation.

:) :) :)   All day long smiles. Step one has been achieved. We have a rocky road ahead, but I foresee that the Media's ALL-Repub Coverage will shift now that the "Demographics" have. I wish that All Dems, as the leaders of Congress, would STOP going on Fox, doing Fox Interviews period, and going on ANY Panels that include morons like Hannity,Coulter,O'Reilly. I think that would do a big step in killing those fools ratings and their "T-V-ability".  Our biggest chore will be making sure our own team doesn't bow down to the gremlins of Power and Greed and Lobbyist favors. The ball is in the Democrat's court- We put them there. Let's see what they are going to do. They better believe that we WILL be watching them every step of the way.

(Good Gravy... Did we just SAVE America from Bush?) I still can't believe it. Every time he says "bipartisanship" with that blank look and his tongue between his teeth, no doubt= I get a euphoric rush. We won. We won.

Hey Wehlia, long time...

I hope with all my heart that the Dems will work to reverse the damage that's been done, and work toward solutions to those most excellent items on your wishlist.
