The widening American class divide

I ran across this great opinion piece by the new Democrat Senater from Virginia.  He covers all the things I have been saying for years.  So, here ya go:

From the Wallstreet Journal:

Class Struggle
American workers have a chance to be heard.

The most important--and unfortunately the least debated--issue in politics today is our society's steady drift toward a class-based system, the likes of which we have not seen since the 19th century. America's top tier has grown infinitely richer and more removed over the past 25 years. It is not unfair to say that they are literally living in a different country. Few among them send their children to public schools; fewer still send their loved ones to fight our wars. They own most of our stocks, making the stock market an unreliable indicator of the economic health of working people. The top 1% now takes in an astounding 16% of national income, up from 8% in 1980. The tax codes protect them, just as they protect corporate America, through a vast system of loopholes.

Incestuous corporate boards regularly approve compensation packages for chief executives and others that are out of logic's range. As this newspaper has reported, the average CEO of a sizeable corporation makes more than $10 million a year, while the minimum wage for workers amounts to about $10,000 a year, and has not been raised in nearly a decade. When I graduated from college in the 1960s, the average CEO made 20 times what the average worker made. Today, that CEO makes 400 times as much.

In the age of globalization and outsourcing, and with a vast underground labor pool from illegal immigration, the average American worker is seeing a different life and a troubling future. Trickle-down economics didn't happen. Despite the vaunted all-time highs of the stock market, wages and salaries are at all-time lows as a percentage of the national wealth. At the same time, medical costs have risen 73% in the last six years alone. Half of that increase comes from wage-earners' pockets rather than from insurance, and 47 million Americans have no medical insurance at all.   Read the Rest here.

While I may not agree with every single point that he makes, his general thesis still stands true.  We have a major problem here and it needs to be fixed pronto.

Sorry about the referendum.

Webb's statement may be the most "radical" premise uttered by a politician in the last 20 years. The real elitists (and my boss is one) are utterly appalled by statements such as this. They have the power, and they cannot believe that a white man in power would dare disrupt the Hierarchy of the ruling elite. Webb's statement has them pulling out their hair, believe me.

"Trickle down" it total bullshit. It's a carrot dangled in front of the middle class: "If you only work harder, play ball, massage the system, you will get rich like us" nyuk nyuk. As they cover their faces with the WSJ and chuckle to themselves...

This is probably the most important matter in the future of the United States today. The matter of getting us out of Iraq and not sacrificing thousands more US troops is more urgent, but Webb's statement - and whether or not middle America can force the ruling elite to change their ways - will define America's future.

and in case the Marido/Caveman of the blogosphere are still quabbling over semantics, I know it's UNconstitutional, not anticonstitutional.  Anti just has a bit more bite, u know?

Sorry, everyone, I'm just a little bit pissed after campaigning or Colorado's Referendum I (google it) for 5 weeks only to see it lose by a lousy 2,000 votes.  It was a tough election:  good for the U.S., bad for Colorado.  Ah well.  One day all these pig-riding hicks will either inbreed each other out or come to their senses.  I hope I'm still alive when the time comes.

things may be looking bleak, but remember:  at least we wont have to suffer any more anticonstitutional legislation now that the dems have control (however slim) of the house AND senate.  We may not be able to enact truly liberal legislation due to low numbers and heir bush's veto power, but at least we can put a stopper on the fascist crap the neocons have been putting through these past 6 years.  A stalemate - however bittersweat - is still better than suffering a checkmate.  I'm optimistic, though - the time's they are a changin', whether they want to admit it or not.

Good to see this blog is still up and running.
